PROJECT 2022 TASK FORCE Stage ‘Save Our Football’ Protest In Benin, Sue For Review Of NFF Statute

Ayoola Adeleke

In an unrelenting pace of sensitizing the world and calling on the current Nigerian football administration, the train of ‘Save Our Football’, an offshoot of The Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN), on Monday stopped in Benin City with a peaceful rally that lasted for about one hour around the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium axis.

The proceeding started from inside the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium with ex-internationals turned administrators as well as other stakeholders marching peacefully through the stadium road to Oba Akenzua road with a display of placards and big banners calling for the Amaju Pinnick led the board to do the needful.

Speaking to journalists at the end of the proceeding, General Secretary of the Project 2022 Task Force, Edema Fuludu pointed out the purpose of the rally, the third of its kind.

“The task force objective is to ensure that we have a standard operating system in Nigerian football as is obtainable worldwide. We know that Nigeria Football has gone down the drain over some time, especially in the last eight years under Amaju Pinnick led board and the task force’s responsibility had been that we want to change the statute of the NFF so that we can have equal representation of our block, all footballers and the players union to get an avenue to run Nigeria Football.”

“Today, we are here on the sixth day of June 2022 as the third rally leg we have come to. We have done this in Abuja, Lagos and this in Benin City of Edo State and we’ll also go to other states nationwide – we will move to Delta and we’ve been contacted to come to Jos and other places.”

“People are not happy with the way our football is going in this country. People are not happy we could not get to the two Nations Cup back to back. People are not happy we could not qualify for Qatar 2022. These are the myriads of others concerning the maladministration of football in Nigeria has led us to say we want to take the bull by the horn.”

“It’s time for the NFF board led by Amaju Pinnick to throw in the towel and resign so we can have a footpath to future development in Nigeria Football. We are interested in Nigeria’s Football growth.”

“The players are suffering, our league is nothing to write home about, we want a quality league where we can measure the standard of football in Nigeria. It is not only about the Super Eagles of Nigeria, but football development is also measured by the quality of the league of a country and we have nothing to show as a result and this has become an anomaly we need to correct.”

“That is why the task force is taking this thing to the extreme to ensure we can turn the tide and make sure we have equal representation and those who are interested in becoming the president of the NFF can have the avenue. It is time for us to know we are five members of the NFF — The Players Union, The Players Association, The Coaches Association, The League and the FAs. If there are five members of the federation, how can one member be having 36 representatives as delegates? There is no room for anybody to get to the apex of Nigerian Football, we need to change the narrative of Nigerian football which is why we are here today.”

“We are here today, to sensitise the world. We will not relent until the new dawn comes into Nigeria Football,” he quipped.

In the same tone, Chief Victor Rumson Baribote registered the displeasure of the Task Force – an offshoot of the players Union.
“Well, in this protest, we are not witch-hunting anybody. if you are a leader of football administration in the country it is expected that you bring back the gains of football administration.”

“So what we are experiencing in the past eight years is rather than advancing our football or bringing back the gains of football administration to Nigeria instead people are using it to develop themselves. And in fact out of the five members if you look at it, the referees, the coaches, depend on what the players are bringing to the table, today if you ask the board of the Nigeria Football Federation, to come to Ogbemudia Stadium, you can count the number of people. But when you talk about the Edema Fuludus, the Harrison Jalas, and the Austin Popo, with the current numbers of players playing, you can see the gate cannot contain people. The game belongs to the players.

“So what we are simply saying is, fine we have allowed outside people to administer, thinking they can do better. Even colonisation, there’s a period we said enough of this. If you are not a governor, you cannot be chairman of the Governor’s forum. That this is about football, so when football is being discussed you expect that the players who are the ingredients, who are the owners, should form the better part of it. We are not saying others cannot come in, but we want to have our rightful place.”

“And in all, the people who are doing it are not doing it well, what we are saying is enough of this maladministration and enough of us the players, the owners of the game being relegated to the background.”

The General Secretary, Board of Trustees of the Professional Footballers Association, Comrade Austin Popo, called for having the right people in the right position as laid down by the statute of international football standards.

“It’s part of this administration. As you said, the strength of any football nation is measured in the domestic league. When you don’t have a visible league, when we cannot produce one player from the domestic league to play in the national team, in the past days, the likes of Edema Fuludu started from NNPC FC and the rest, people like Finidi started from Sharks, at a time we were teammates at the State camp.”

“You know Nigeria’s we have a playing tradition. We combine skill with robustness, but that has been taken away by bringing anyone that has it. You cannot play the Brazilian style of football more than the Brazilians, you cannot play the European style of football more than the Europeans. You cannot bring the Europeans to come and play and we feel we can do it better. And for us to do it better, we must bring in those people who have the wherewithal, the technical ability.”

“I don’t want to be personal, people that are heading the technical department of the NFF, how technical are they? While the players who have played the game, in our youthful days contribute to this football. Allow the people who own the take to manage their affairs.”

The protest was led by the General Secretary of the Task Force of the Save Our Football, Comrade Edema Fuludu, Secretary Board of Trustees Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria, Comrade Austin Popo, Chief Rumson Baribote, Chairman PFAN Edo Chapter, David Aigbovo amongst others.

The President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick was on Tuesday, April 12 nominated by the CONFEDERATION AFRICAINE  DE FOOTBALL  (CAF) president, Dr Patrice Motsepe to be a member of the newly established FIFA Working Group on Normalisation Committees.

CAF PRESIDENT, Patrice Motsepe

This was made public in a letter directed to the office of the President of the NFF and signed by the General Secretary of CAF, Véron Mosengo-Omba.

“It is our distinct pleasure o inform you that CAF President,  Dr Patrice Motsepe has nominated you to be part of the newly established FIFA Working Group on Normalisation Committees.

“We are confident that your nomination to this working group will positively contribute to the pertinent, and often essential, the role played by Normalisation Committees in support of federations and towards the fulfilment of good governance practices.”

Meanwhile, the NFF President has been under fire after the Super Eagles FA led to secure a ticket to the Qatar 2022 World Cup after playing a 1-1 draw with the Black Stars of Ghana at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

Amaju Pinnick, NFF President

Pinnick however jettisoned his plans for running for a third term in office saying “Do I want to run? It’s a no-no. My family is very key to me. They said it’s taking a toll on me and the family.

“They believe that I’ve done my best, and it’s time to move on. It’s a regrettable decision, but it’s the best,”.

It’s time to move on – Amaju Pinnick on Third Term Agenda

By Jokanola Bolaji

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick has ruled out contesting for a third term in office when his current tenure expires in September 2022.

In the past few months, reports have emerged that he will be vying for a third term, but with the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the Qatar 2023 FIFA World Cup, there has been pressure from Nigerian football stakeholders and Nigerians for him to step down from his position.

In an interview on Arise Tv, the former Delta State Sports Commission boss. debunked such reports as he claimed his time at the Glasshouse has taken a toll on his relationship with his family.

“I’m eligible to run according to statutes. Do I want to run ?, It’s a no-no, my family is very key to me, they said it’s taking a toll on me and the family. They believed that I’ve done my best and it was time to move on. It’s a regrettable decision, but it’s the best “, Pinnick told Arise TV

Opinion: Eguavoen, Pinnick, Mercenaries, Creativity, Goalkeeping Issues and Violence; lessons learnt

By Jokanola Bolaji

The pain of not participating in the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 16 years still stings the heart of Nigerians. It’s been about 12 hours since that shambolic performance but with the big names in the Super Eagles squad, it makes the loss gutting and devastating.

It was a sharp decline as many have termed the current crop of players as one of the best, the Nigerian Male National Team has seen in years, but a bad fall off the cliff has shown that flair without adequate preparation, team discipline, and national self-belief would not win games, which has provided many lessons as possible.

Stadium Chaos

Many might have thought that when Tunisian referee Selma Selik blew the final whistle at the MKO Abiola Stadium, the game was over but it was far from over as irate and angered fans engulfed the pitch and unleashed destruction at the stadium.

Aftermath the pitch invasion and the subsequent attacks on Nigeria football officials, it was revealed that the doping officer for the game, Dr Joseph Kabungo from Zambia, suddenly collapsed and died – not related to the fans encroachment according to a reliable source, journalists who were at the stadium confirmed the unfortunate event.

This brings to reality how understaffed the security agents at the stadium were as the pitch invaders overwhelmed the pitch despite a few tear gas canisters shot into the lush green grass. Reports have it that the players had to stay put in the dressing room for hours until reinforcements arrived at the stadium.

A heart-wrenching event as Nigeria may be facing sanctions from the world football governing body, FIFA after the Nigeria Football Federation failed to provide adequate security at the stadium.

Nigeria’s midfield is the weakest link

Going into these qualifiers, Eguavoen led technical crew with a luxury of 25 players had called up five midfielders with Frank Onyeka, Oghenekaro Etebo who is recovering from a long injury, Joe Aribo, Innocent Bonke who made it straight into the starting XI for the first leg as a replacement for injured Ndidi and young starlet Akinwummi Amoo who plays as a winger for FC Copenhagen was named as a midfielder.

This leads to many questions as only Aribo and Onyeka were the only fit natural midfielders who have experience playing for the Eagles leading to a lot of questions about what the gaffer’s decision might be.

In midfield, Eguavoen played ‘unfit’ Oghenekaro Etebo alongside Rangers’ Joe Aribo and Brentford’s Frank Onyeka. And for the first hour or so, the Eagles looked disjointed as in the first leg and were dominated in that department.

While Onyeka and Aribo were a nuisance for Thomas Partey and Mohammed Kudus, Etebo did very little when on the ball and rarely got the attack moving with progressive passes as passes made were either behind or beyond the receiver’s ability to trap.

The game had the midfield isolated with the defence trying to link up through the wing or with a long pass from the defence to the attack, which could not create real-time chances against a watertight defence and with an extra eye on the attackers and a perception of the dangers they can cause.

This brings to a conclusion that without Wilfred Ndidi, Nigeria has no midfield.

Goalkeeping Issues

The goalkeeping aspect of the Super Eagles seems far from solved as Nigeria has suffered a mirage of goalkeeping errors. In Cameroon against Tunisia, it was Okoye but in Abuja against Ghana, it was Uzoho.

Francis Uzoho seemed confident and composed in goal in the first leg, which helped calm the team’s nerves going into the return fixture. He also made a vital save in the first leg of the game, but the second leg saw him conceding a long-range shot from outside the box courtesy of Thomas Partey in the 10th minute.

Sadly, the last time a goalkeeper who could be relied upon if the defence ever failed ended when Carl Ikeme announced his forced retirement.

Austin Eguavoen’s Tactical Choices

Many have asked if Eguavoen is fit for the task but the results and recent performance have proved he isn’t, of or is he?

The current interim Head Coach of the Super Eagles as well as the Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles Austine Eguavoen has come under hot pressure following his tactical decisions and squad choices.

Eguavoen clouded Nigerians in an Eldorado during the group stage fixtures at the just concluded 33rd Africa Cup of Nations but since the Round of 16 clashes against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia, it has been calamity upon calamity.

Nigeria played with the same system seen at the AFCON. While it’s expressive, effervescent and beautiful to see when it’s in full throttle, it’s a system that was very easy for the Ghanaians to shut out.

Ghana piled the pressure early in the game which resulted in an early crucial away goal. Muhammed Kudus in Ghana’s #10 position was very intelligent with his movement and caused Etebo and Onyeka a load of problems.

The Super Eagles could not withhold the flurry of attacks and keep their cool. In another shutout, similar to what the Super Eagles faced against Tunisia, the duo of Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon hardly took a foot rightly, same as the first leg but this time it was Dennis and Lookman suffering this fate.

This asks a question if the wing play can’t be utilised fully, then why stick to it? But another school of thought might ponder on the lack of creative midfielders in Nigeria with Alex Iwobi suspended?

Squad Selection and Mercenaries

In an attempt to win without rigours of good preparation, Nigeria has consistently called up players into the senior national team as long as they play anywhere outside the shores of Nigeria.

The fallout is having a national team of strangers or what many may term ‘mercenaries’ that are lacking in cohesion to play to their strength. This was revalidated at the 2021 AFCON, and most recently the game against Ghana, a team of 11 foreign-based players may find it hard to win a crucial match as cohesion will definitely be laughing.

Teams such as the Teranga Lions of Senegal and Pharaohs of Egypt finalists showed that it takes a longer time of commitment, consistency and hard work to have a formidable team with an organic tradition of play and a deep squad at to go far in a tournament.

This boils down to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), League Management Company (LMC) and the local leagues.

No home-based player was called up to the national team up until Okoye’s absence was inevitable, John Noble of Enyimba called up.

As it stands the local league is not on TV and can’t be watched by many despite the NFF’s heavy investment into the defunct NPFLtv, which did not survive the past six months of its expectancy. Despite its hype, NPFLTV was on paper a success and in reality a huge failure.

Amaju Pinnick’s Third Term

Amaju Pinnick’s third term ambition seems to have hit the rock as the Super Eagles failed to pick up the Qatar 2022 World Cup Ticket after a 1-1 draw against Ghana.

The Amaju Pinnick led NFF has failed to qualify Nigeria for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) back to back in 2015 and 2017 and also failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and now most recently the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

Elections in the NFF ought to have been held in September, but various sources have asserted that the second tenure expires after the world cup which was postponed from June to November due to the Corona Virus pandemic.

With the Super Eagles not going to the World Cup, will Pinnick’s third term ambition still be a bone of contention? Another question that requires answers is, Will the elections be held this September or next February?

If the Super Eagles must return to reckoning early enough, quality administration of football cannot be an afterthought.

And should the Glass House piece the pieces together; the Nigerian side can bounce back from the disappointment and regain its mojo in the upcoming 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

Africa Beach Soccer Union commissions headquarters in Abuja

The headquarters of the Africa Beach Soccer Union, ABSU has been officially commissioned in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Nigeria.

NFF President and member of the FIFA Council, Mr Amaju Pinnick who was represented by the General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi was impressed having donated the offices earlier in 2020, pledging more support for the young continental body.

An elated Dr Sanusi commended the ABSU President, Mahmud Hadejia and his team for the giant strides in promoting beach soccer in Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
“I remember receiving members of the body some time ago at our secretariat and they shared their vision with us which made us support them with these office spaces. I’m glad today we are here to commission the offices. It shows how dedicated and focused they are,” Sanusi stated.

The NFF Scribe Speaks further; “CAF is happy with what is happening. I was with Senghor CAF 1st Vice President and Veron CAF General Secretary they are all excited about the development with this body coming up to complement efforts of CAF and FIFA developing the game.

Dr Sanusi also used the occasion to applaud the Nigeria Beach Soccer Association for seeing through its first league season successfully, which was wrapped up in July earlier in the year, maintaining that with the commencement of a privately driven Nigeria Beach Soccer League (NBSL), there is hope on the horizon for the return of the Nigeria Beach Soccer National team at the International scene.

“You will recall Nigeria was doing very well in beach soccer, but all of a sudden we started dwindling and the problem was traced to lack of a functional league. That was why we put a hold on our participation in International events and said we must start our local league. With a functional local league now, I can assure you that we will go and sit down at our level (NFF) to review our stand (on Super Sand Eagles) so that we can resume participation in International beach soccer again,” he said.

Sanusi pledged to work more closely with the Association and ABSU to promote the game in Nigeria and Africa.
Earlier, ABSU President Mahmud Hadejia said the continental body aimed to promote and develop a strong beach soccer culture and league across Africa.

He said the commissioning of the headquarters in Abuja will go a long way to fast-tracking the development of the game.
“Today is historic for stakeholders of beach soccer across Africa because we have been pushing for a functional headquarters for a long time as this will help facilitate the needed growth of the game in Africa,” Hadejia said.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Nigeria Beach Soccer Association, Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande in his remarks, said the association will continue to work round the clock to improve the beach soccer league in Nigeria.

Recall the Africa Beach Soccer Union was formed in 2020, with its members across the continent who are key players in their respective National Federations.

While the event was streamed lived for members across Africa who joined the historic event, present at the commissioning alongside Dr Sanusi were NFF executive committee member and Chairman of the Nigeria Beach Soccer Association and  Hon. Suleiman Yahaya Kwande; the President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation/Chairman Kaduna Beach Soccer Association, Engineer Musa Nimrod; representative of Chairman Wacot Rice Ltd a subsidiary of Tropical General Investments Group, CEO of BAM Projects and Properties Barrister Abba Bello Mohammed, Chief Operation Officers of the Nigeria National League and Nationwide League One Mr Emmanuel Adesanya and Mr Shola Ogunnowo, ABSU General Secretary Arc. Taye Olajide, amongst other top personalities.

Just before the Coach Scout – Gernot Rohr’s exit from Nigerian Football

Of Gernot Rohr’s Safety and NFF Shenanigan

By Aderonke Ogunleye-Bello

The quote below was part of a statement attributed to the NFF and circulated across social media some days ago. I am prompted to pen this opinion piece after waiting for the NFF for a rebuttal….it never came.

“We told him that based on the conditions on the ground, we can no longer guarantee his safety. We have given him a choice to take. Are you ready to work in such a hostile environment or do you want to walk away?”

How unethical, a blatant dereliction of duty by the NFF. How unethical! …a downright threat to human life…
Putting a gun to his head so to speak. Has Nigeria now gotten so bad that insecurity is what you should be used as a factor to discuss a football contract? Subtle Threats?

I am not a fan of Gernot Rohr, a stand that I have made known since his resumption, based on his poor records and dislike for home-based footballers.

In Nigeria, we have better indigenous coaches with better records and experiences. Rohr as we know is too inexperienced to coach the Super Eagles, he only got lucky, though he might have done well as a coach for the Flying Eagles or Dream Team.

That said, how could the NFF say they cannot guarantee his safety? Such unfair thoughts to process or even say.

With this statement, they are exposing Rohr to imminent dangers. It means Rohr, ‘you are on your own’ whatever happens to you, deal with it!

While we impatiently await the sacking of Gernot Rohr as Super Eagles Coach, nothing must happen to Rohr. His absolute safety in Nigeria is NFF’s responsibility and by all means necessary, they must ensure that he is safe while the contract lasts. No evil must befall Gernot Rohr.

As a matter of fact, if Rohr wants to play dirty, he could sue the NFF for that statement

Is the atmosphere not hostile already? You guys are now throwing him to the lions, to be devoured? What if he was physically attacked by his perceived enemies or those that have been unhappy with his results as Super Eagles Coach, following your statements?

Whatever dealings you are having with the coach, he is representing our great Nation and, we must be honourable enough to ensure his safety.

If the coach abides by the contract rules and he hasn’t defaulted, the honourable thing to do is go back to the contract, pay him off, let him go, and not threaten him with insecurity. So insensitive!

If you do not have money, for now, both parties could sit at the table, make an offer, and negotiate. Hey Rohr, we only have 50% for now, we will pay at a later date. Very gentlemanly.

This is the right time to employ someone you believe in. It is that straightforward, stop already with the play of insecurity cards.

You cannot run away from your duties because there is a contract in place, Rohr has not breached it but Nigerians want him out! I want him out of the Super Eagles as well!

I ask again, what is so special about Rohr, why does he seem so untouchable? If Rohr was an indigenous coach, would he have lasted this long? As we all know, he would have been disgraced and sacked long ago.

I will conclude by saying there is yet another crisis brewing and on the horizon for the NFF and if they want to make good plans ahead of the Nations/World Cup campaign, this is the time to fix it!!!

NFF, wake up!

…lauds Pinnick, NFF for exposing NPFL Stars

By Akeem Busari
